In my practice I have a Topcon Triton swept OCT eye scanner. This medical device can make deep tissue scans of the human retina. It is unique to have combined skills in optometry and 3D design. This creates an opportunity to design the perfect optical frame with all the right geometry resulting in the ultimate eyewear. My eyewear is designed around the geometry of an optical lens. Additive manufacturing requires new insights in designing eyewear. The post treatment should be minimal so large eyewear factories are not needed. This means that the fit and finish should be all done in 3D already.
My designs can have complex 3D textures and can be fully customized to the geometry of a person.
I am building our own 3d scan rig with the use of a professional Artec Eva scanner. This way we can get as close as 0.1 mm 3D point accuracy with 0.03% over 100 centimeter.
At this moment we are creating a database of 3D scanned human bodies as a reference for current and future eyewear designs. Because we scan full bodies we can also use these data for other applications than eyewear. We are doing a lot of 3D scans in a retail environment where we can test our designs and streamline our routine.
In the future we will even be able to print corrective lenses in eyewear frames. The technology is there already.
